Equipment
Mariah provides a several different styles rafts
which gives you the opportunity to experience the river in a variety of ways,
it also allows us to match water levels with suitable craft for maneuverability
and safety.
On Paddle Boats you are actively involved in
getting through the rapids in response to commands from your guide. On the
Kings, Merced, and American Rivers, most of the rafts are paddle rafts. On the
Tuolumne, we need to carry overnight gear with us, and therefore need the gear
carrying capacity of oar-powered rafts as well.
On the Tuolumne River, we also run Oar Boats
which carry all the food and duffle. Higher water levels sometimes necessitate
that these boats also carry passengers to help when precise maneuvering and
extra power are needed.
Oar-Paddle Combos are also especially effective
working as a coordinated support and safety boat at extra high water levels. We
use this combination on several of the rivers when the water is really high.
We offer 2-3-hour "guide-your-own-Inflatable
Kayak" as a fun sport where you can be a bit more independent. You map paddle
by yourself or share your kayak with your child or a friend. This trip is done
only in the easy Class I-II stretch of river on the South Fork of the American
River.
Our Life Jackets are coast-guard
approved. Wetsuits are included in the price on most spring and early
summer. Our wetsuits are the "Farmer John-style", sleeveless and full leg.
