Spring and Early Summer Rafting 2006!
Imagine
looking at these images in person! These beautiful, cute, heart-warming
glimpses of nature at her best, can be found on the
South,
North,
and
Middle
Forks of the American River. If you join us this spring and summer for a
unique rafting adventure you will bring home memories of more than the exciting
rapids. Rafting is also about viewing nature at her best, away from the crowds
of the city. The birds, the fish, the blue and green water, the white caps of
waves, our beautiful
campground right next to the river, our wine-tasting during hors d'oeuvres,
fresh coffee in the morning, happy and fascinating guides, brilliant stars, and
much more await you.
The
overall water content for California's North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork
American River, is currently at 195% of the state's historical (last 50
years) average, and 65% higher than last year. And, it is true, that
April's precipitation in the area is 300% above normal. What this means is that
we are looking at opportunities for some pretty incredible adventures on these
three rivers. We have not seen this high water since 1983.
High
water means different things depending on the river. Often it means that
the river becomes more powerful, but the rapids can change. Some rapids are
smoothed over, other rapids are created, going around a corner can take on a
new meaning, and the sounds of water flowing over pebbles can sound like a
waterfall. We will provide you with a very safe rafting adventure.
April/May Guide Profile Scott Wager
Scotty
moved to Mariah's camp five years ago and quickly became one of our most highly
skilled and popular river guides. Here is what he did this summer; don't we all
wish we could have such adventures.
After
working hard to earn my Captain's license, I flew into Warm Springs Bay, South
East Alaska, and enjoyed working as a fly-fishing guide and boat Captain for
the Baranof Wilderness Lodge. Before I had time to set my bags down I was out
on the water, guiding. I had spent so much time dreaming about this day and now
it was here, it seemed surreal. I had so much to learn and I was humbled on a
daily basis by the beauty of Alaska. I had a successful season, that is to say
we caught heaps of fish and I didn't break anything.
Then I
was off to western Alaska where I guided three 100-mile 7-day fly fishing
trips. We had some close bear encounters and many fine Alaskan moments. Julie
flew in and we went to see Red in Denali. We showed up in time to hop on a
commercial trip with Red on the Nenana River! I was also happy that my Mom was
able to come visit, so I could share my passion for Alaska with her.
After
returning to Truckee I've kept busy doing carpentry and skiing at Sugar Bowl.
Mostly
I've been awaiting the spring so I can see everyone at Mariah and get caught up
with all my good friends on the river. For me nothing is more satisfying than
to see a team come together to accomplish a similar objective. There is not a
better or more passionate, and professional crew out on the river than the
Mariah crew; I take great pride in being a part of it. I know that when the
team works it sets the foundation for our guests to get the best trip possible
and that's what it's all about. - Scotty
